Pet Friendly Emergency Shelters To Open in Jacksonville for the First Time
June 1, 2006
The City of Jacksonville has launched the Pet Friendly Public Evacuation Shelter Program which will allow people to bring their pets when seeking shelter during hurricane threats. Three pet friendly shelters have been nemed: Landmark Middle School, Mandarin Middle School, and Chimney Lakes Elementary School.
Pre-registration is required. Pets allowed include dogs, cats, rodents (such as hamsters, gerbils, etc.), rabbits, and birds. Note that reptiles will not be allowed in these shelters.
In addition to pre-registration, pets must have proof of vaccination, proper crates or cages and be maintained by their owners while at the shelter. Animals may be housed in separate rooms from their owners. Owners should also provide all necessary supplies, medications, and food to take care of their pets while sheltered.
